Conference Themes: “Education, Power and Empowerment: Education as an Instrument of Global Transformation”
The Inaugural Asian Conference on Education & International Development 2015 held Sunday, March 29, 2015 – Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at the Rhiga Royal Hotel & Osaka International Conference Centre, Osaka was an international and interdisciplinary conference that brought together a range of academics and practitioners to discuss new directions of research and discovery in education and international development. ACE-ID2015 afforded delegates the opportunity to renew old acquaintances, make new contacts, and network across higher education and beyond. The conference theme: “Education, Power and Empowerment: Education as an Instrument of Global Transformation” provided the stimulus for over 130 presentations that addressed the significant needs and concerns held within international education and development, as well as the success stories where new strategic concepts within learning and knowledge are providing transformative change for social justice, equity and the escape from poverty.
IAFOR was pleased to have with us for our inaugural ACE-ID2015 Keynote Speaker Mr. Lowell Sheppard, Asia Pacific Director of the HOPE International Development Agency, who spoke on the goals and rationale of the organisation he leads and gave conference delegates an insight into their operational focus in working with the world’s extreme poor in their quest to climb out of poverty. Also with us was Featured Speaker Dr. Monty P. Satiadarma, the former Rector at Tarumanagara University, Indonesia, who provided a fascinating insight from a Clinical Psychologist’s perspective into the contemporary concerns existing within the Indonesian educational system.
IAFOR values highly the local cultural community and our delegates’ experience of it, so it was with great pleasure that we welcomed art students from Kyoto’s Ritsumeikan University who led a Japanese Calligraphy Workshop. Delegates had a stimulating experience mastering some basic calligraphy techniques and creating their own drawings.
Our thanks go out to the many delegates in attendance who presented outstanding research as well as the ongoing support of Professor Stuart Picken, Chairman of the IAFOR IAB and Professor Sue Jackson, of Birkbeck, University of London UK, the IAFOR International Director of Programme: Education for their continuing guidance and leadership. We hope to see you again in 2016 for the second ACE-ID Conference at our new venue in Kobe, Japan.
