Pre-Conference Tour of Nara - 12,000 JPY

Thursday, May 11, 2017- 8:00-18:30

Set in the rolling hills and verdant ancient forest of Nara Prefecture in south-central Honshu, Nara was Japan’s first capital city and is a key part of the country’s cultural legacy. Join IAFOR on a tour of the city, which is home to eight Unesco World Heritage Sites and a wealth of temples and artwork dating back as far as the eighth century. Highlights include becoming acquainted with the friendly local deer, visiting Todai-ji, which houses an impressive 15-metre bronze Buddha, the largest in the world, and stopping off at the Kasuga Taisha Shrine with its hundreds of beautiful bronze lanterns. The tour is led by an experienced guide and includes a traditional Japanese lunch, as well as the 90-minute bus ride from Kobe.

Dinner

The official Conference Dinner will be held in a private function room at a nearby restaurant. It is a great opportunity to enjoy some delicious food while networking with fellow delegates. More information.

Post-tour

Post-Conference Tour of Kyoto - 12,000 JPY

Monday, May 15, 2017- 8:00-18:30

The old Imperial capital of Japan, Kyoto is the country’s cultural and historical centre. The ancient capital is home to hundreds of temples and includes 17 World Heritage sites. Kyoto is an amazing mix of nature, traditional buildings, and modern-day Japan. Join us as we spend the day touring Kyoto, learning more about this area’s vast history and deep cultural heritage.

Tour Locations

Nijo Castle

Started by Tokuagawa Ieyasu in 1601, Nijo Castle served as the Kyoto residence for the Tokugawa Shogunate. One of the castle’s most famous aspects is its Nightingale floors. These floors were specially designed to “chirp” as you walk on them in order to protect the shogunate from sneak attacks at night.

Kiyomizudera

One of Japan’s most famous temples, Kiyomizudera is known for its waterfall and temple which are nestled in the hills that surround the city. Divided into three separate streams, visitors can drink from the falls by catching the water in cups attached to poles. Each stream is said to add its own benefit to life, but drinking from all three is considered greedy.

Kinkaku-ji

Japan’s famous Golden Temple. The main pavillion is coated in gold leaf. It’s set in a Zen Buddhist garden designed for strolling and meditation, with ponds, a waterfall and a tea garden.

Tour Schedule

  • 07:45 – Meet in the lobby of the ANA Crowne Plaza Kobe
  • 08:00 – Leave for Kyoto
  • 10:00 – Kiyomizudera
  • 12:00 – 13:00 Lunch (Kyoto Royal Park Hotel)
  • 13:30 – Nijo Castle
  • 15:20 – Kinkakuji
  • 17:00 – Kyoto Station (optional drop-off point)
  • 18:30 – Return to the ANA Crowne Plaza Kobe

*Intended as a guide only. Exact tour details will be provided closer to the conference date. Times are approximate and weather conditions may affect outdoor parts of the tour.

Important Information

  • This will be a bus tour of Kyoto, but will still require plenty of walking so please keep this in mind when preparing. Locations may vary depending on availability and weather.
  • Lunch will be at a restaurant. It is a buffet lunch with over 60 dishes to choose from.
  • All transportation and entrance fees are included in the fee.
  • Gifts, memorabilia, and foods outside of lunch are not included in the price.
