The IAFOR Journal of Asian Studies is an internationally reviewed and editorially independent interdisciplinary journal associated with IAFOR’s international conferences on Asian Studies. Like all IAFOR publications, it is freely available to read online, and is free of publication fees for authors. The first issue was published in December 2014, and the journal continues to publish annually.

The journal Editor welcomes submissions related to Asian Studies from academics, practitioners and professionals from within the field. Full papers submitted to the related IAFOR conference proceedings research repositories will also be considered, providing that they meet the journal submission guidelines. Authors will be contacted if their paper is selected for review. All papers are reviewed equally according to standard peer review processes, regardless of whether or not the authors have attended a related IAFOR conference.

Indexes: The IAFOR Journal of Asian Studies is indexed in SHERPA/RoMEO and Google Scholar.

Editor’s Note:

The IAFOR Journal of Asian Studies is a progressive new journal that welcomes scholarship from the late 20th century into what is being called the Asian Century. It aims to explore social, economic, political and cultural trends in the growing connectivity across cultures in Asia. The cultural citizenship that is evolving from this convergence of cultures embraces a regional empathy and conviviality of harmony, or hybridism. The journal is interested in presenting views on cultural mobility, cultural arbitration and understanding, citizenship beyond borders, migration and identity (national, cultural and diasporic), belonging and sharing, media trade, national branding, ‘soft-power competition’ and popular culture. It is peer reviewed and aims to give a voice to scholars considering a wide range of emerging aspects of Asian studies.

Volume 2: Open Call Timeline

  • Review and selection process August 31-October 30, 2016.
  • Revision of papers for the final submission November 23, 2016.
  • Editorial Board final review of articles November 30, 2016.

Dr Seiko Yasumoto lectures and carries out research on Japanese and East Asian media and cultural studies at the University of Sydney. Her primary research, which she has published widely, includes Japanese government media policy and broadcasting media within the domain of popular culture. The scope includes transmission of content, textual analysis, copyright, media industries, adaptation theory, youth culture, audience analysis and trans-national media cultural flows in Japan and East Asia. She is the guest editor of the Journal of the Oriental Society of Australia special edition on Global Media 2010 and co-editor of the scholarly journal Ilha Do Desterro a Journal of English Language, Literatures in English and Cultural Studies: Expression, Identity and Society.Vol.2006. She was the Japan and North, East Asia regional representative of the Asian Studies of Association of Australia (2009-2012), is an editorial board member of the Oriental Society of Australia, the East Asian Popular Culture Association and Journalism and Mass communication USA. She holds a prestigious Teaching Excellence Award from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, The University of Sydney.

Professor Jason Bainbridge is Chair of Media and Communication at Swinburne University of Technology. He is the author of over 60 articles, book chapters and papers exploring the relationships between media studies, journalism, Law, the city and popular culture; media representation; cultural flows in the Asia Pacific; the idea of popular culture as vernacular theory; superheroes and comic book culture; and the role of merchandising in media convergence, particularly around the development of transmedia narratives. Jason received an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Best Teaching Award in 2011, also holds a Bachelor of Law and has worked as a professional ethnographer, a travel writer and a stand-up comedian – skills that he still occasionally draws upon when writing and presenting. Jason is a regular media commentator for ABC Radio, Television and Online. He is the co-author of Media and Journalism: New Approaches to Theory and Practice (with N Goc and L Tynan), OUP, 2008.

Michael Curtin is the Duncan and Suzanne Mellichamp Professor of Global Studies in the Department of Film and Media Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is also co-director of the Media Industries Project at the Carsey-Wolf Center. His books include Playing to the World’s Biggest Audience: The Globalization of Chinese Film and TV and Reorienting Global Communication: Indian and Chinese Media Beyond Borders. He is co-editor of the Chinese Journal of Communication and the International Screen Industries book series of the British Film Institute. Curtin has held faculty or research appointments at the University of Wisconsin, Indiana University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Academia Sinica, and the Center for the Humanities at Wesleyan University. At UW he was director of Global Studies and at IU he was director of Cultural Studies. Before entering academia, Curtin was Tokyo correspondent for National Public Radio (US) and his journalism career included stints with Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Pacifica Radio, and Wisconsin Public Television. Curtin’s journalistic background informs Redeeming the Wasteland: Television Documentary and Cold War Politics, a critical history of the dramatic expansion of international news during the early 1960s. Shifting to a contemporary context, he then conducted fieldwork on the globalization of Chinese film and television at the turn of the century, published as Playing to the World’s Biggest Audience. His current book project, Media Capital, compares cities that have become centers of global film and television, such as Bombay, Lagos, and Miami. Curtin has also published books on US media, including Making and Selling Culture, and The American Television Industry, and the forthcoming Distribution Revolution: Screen Media in the Digital Era.

Terry Flew is Professor of Media and Communications in the Creative Industries Faculty at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). His books include Global Creative Industries (Polity, 2013); The Creative Industries, Culture and Policy (Sage, 2012); Key Concepts in Creative Industries (Sage, 2012); Understanding Global Media (Palgrave, 2007); and New Media: An Introduction (Oxford, 2008). He is a Member of the Executive Board of the International Communications Association, and was President of the Australian and New Zealand Communications Association from 2009-2010. He is a member of the Australian Research Council (ARC) College of Experts for Humanities and Creative Arts, and was a member of the ARC Research Evaluation Committee (REC) for the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) evaluation round in 2012. In 2011-12, he was seconded from QUT to become a Commissioner with the Australian Law Reform Commission, chairing the National Classification Scheme Review. He has been engaged with major research projects including: Social Media and Crisis Communication; Creative Workforce in Australia’s Outer Suburban Communities; Citizen Journalism in Australia; Creative Industries Development in post-WTO China; and Interactive Web-based Counselling for at-risk Youth. He has been a Chief Investigator with the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation, the ARC Cultural Research Network, and the Smart Services Co-operative Research Centre. He has worked with industry, government and community research partners including Cisco Systems, Special Broadcasting Service, Kids Help Line, Fairfax Digital, and the National Academies Forum.

Professor Michael Keane is Principal Research fellow at the ARC Centre Fellow at the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation (CCI), Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane. He is an Oriental Scholar with the Shanghai Theatre Academy (2012 – 2014). Michael Keane’s research interests include China’s cultural and media policy, creative industries in China and East Asia, and East Asian cultural exports. He is co-coordinator of the Asian Creative Transformations Lab at QUT and publishes the bi-monthly research newsletter The Asia-Pacific Creative Landing Pad In-flight Magazine, a compendium of critical insights on developments in and across Asia. Michael’s forthcoming publications include Creative Industries in China: Art, Design and Media (Polity 2012) and Media in China: Critical Concepts in Media and Cultural Studies (4 volumes: editor with Wanning Sun). Michael is author of China’s New Creative Clusters: Governance, Human Capital and Regional Investment (Routledge 2011), and Created in China: the Great New Leap Forward (Routledge 2007). He is editor of How Creativity is Changing China by Li Wuwei (Bloomsbury Academic 2011), co-editor with Albert Moran of Cultural Adaptations (Routledge 2010), co-editor with Ying Zhu and Ruoyun Bai of TV Drama in China (HKU Press 2008). Other books include New Television, Globalization and the East Asian Cultural Imagination (with Anthony Fung and Albert Moran, HKU Press 2007), Television across Asia: Television Industries, Programme Formats and Globalisation (ed.
