IAFOR Keynotes Series

Series Editor: Dr Joseph Haldane

The IAFOR Keynotes series is a collection of keynote addresses, or associated papers given at our conferences.

Presented as a part of the open research archive, the keynotes series provides an example of the range and quality of speakers at IAFOR events.

These keynotes are lightly reworked, and contain references
, but are otherwise true to the original address. Many can also be seen in video format on our youtube page.

Whether you were present at the conference or not, the keynotes are thoughtful addresses by senior academics, the content of which may help your research.

IAFOR Commitment

IAFOR publications are freely accessible online, as part of the commitment to constituting a research archive open to all, regardless of institutional and professional status, or background. Authors retain copyright of their work under a creative commons 3.0 agreement. Please remember to cite the source.

Drago Stambuk: Haiku Consciousness
ACAH/LibrAsia 2011 Keynote

[Extract] "The haiku is a way of accessing and representing, an agenda for the common good, for the common betterment. By definition, the haiku is brief; even tiny. Yet in three short lines, a vast metaphysical expanse opens up: this is the paradox, the shock and the achievement of the haiku. A minimal amount of text charged with infinite space and time. I call this open space, this arena of metaphysics, the haiku consciousness."

Charles Bruce: Elgin Mission to Japan
ACAH 2010 Keynote

[Extract] "Both India and China were deeply affected by the experience of colonialism, but the story of Japan’s absorption of Western influence in the second half of the nineteenth century offers a very different perspective on the transmission of ideas and values. Although Japan found itself responding rapidly to economic and social changes driven by external forces, its right to exist as a nation state was largely respected by the colonial powers."
