IAFOR is very saddened to hear of the death of Professor Paul Lowe, a longtime adviser and contributor to the organisation. Professor Lowe was Professor of Conflict, Peace and the Image at London College of Communication, University of the Arts London, United Kingdom.
Professor Lowe was an award-winning photographer, whose work is represented by Panos Pictures, and who has been published in Time, Newsweek, Life, The Sunday Times Magazine, The Observer, and The Independent, amongst others. He has covered breaking news the world over, including the fall of the Berlin Wall, Nelson Mandela’s release, famine in Africa, the conflict in the former Yugoslavia, and the destruction of Grozny in Russia.
Professor Lowe was particularly interested in the relationship of photography and conflict, the role of art and culture in post conflict societies, and the effect of photojournalism on public discourse. He spoke at several IAFOR events, and was the founding judge of the IAFOR Documentary Photography Award.
Dr Joseph Haldane, Chairman and CEO of IAFOR, said, ‘I was greatly shocked and saddened to hear of Paul's death. He was someone whose work I admired immensely, not only as a photographer and photojournalist, but also as a communicator and a teacher. Paul was both a friend to IAFOR, and someone I came to consider a good friend personally. He documented much of the tragedy of war, and his death is itself an awful tragedy. I shall remember him as a powerful speaker and advocate, and a hugely engaging presence and personality.’
Christian Paul Lowe; born November 06, 1963; died Los Angeles, California, October 12, 2024.
