Located in Portugal’s second-largest city, the origins of the University of Porto (UP) date back to the 18th century, when it provided education in science, arts and humanities, before gaining official university status in 1911.
The Faculty of Fine Arts (FBAUP) is the younger “offspring” of the School of Fine Arts of Porto (ESBAP). Building on over 200 years of teaching experience that culminated in the creation of the current Faculty in 1994, FBAUP has become a centre of excellence in arts education in the city of Porto. In the unique spaces of the Palacete Braguinhas, birthplace of the “Escola do Porto”, leading names of Portuguese art, such as the painters Nadir Afonso, Júlio Resende and Júlio Pomar or the sculptor José Rodrigues, all studied and taught here. Their legacy is still honoured today and is most visible in the famous gardens of FBAUP, where the work of new talented artists in the fields of visual arts (Sculpture, Painting) and Communication Design can be appreciated.
