The Centre Norbert Elias was founded in 1984 in Marseilles by the French Sociologist Jean-Claude Passeron as a branch office of the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS) in Paris. Today the Centre Norbert Elias is a research centre composed of several national academic and research institutions (EHESS, CNRS, University of Avignon and Aix-Marseilles University).

Interdisciplinarity is at the heart of the Centre Norbert Elias's scientific project. It brings together researchers in sociology, anthropology, history and in communication and media studies. Since its creation, the Centre Norbert Elias has become one of the leading research centers in France in the study of social and political dynamics of culture and the arts.
