Dr Joseph Haldane, IAFOR President and CEO, is to speak as Invited Lecturer for the Faculty of Journalism’s MA course, “Current Issues of Mass Media” at Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russia on Friday, May 20, 2016.
Dr Haldane will draw upon his academic interest in politics, history and international affairs, his experience as a resident of Japan, as well as his visiting experience at the French Press Institute in the University of Paris II (Université Panthéon-Assas) and the School of Journalism at Sciences Po Paris to contribute as one of the department’s invited ‘influential media scholars’.

“Sorry seems to be the hardest word” Manipulated Histories and National Narratives: Japan, China, the West and the Rest
This lecture will look at issues surrounding Japanese history and its postwar and contemporary relations with other countries, as well as how the media has helped shape and define attitudes towards negotiating history, and how issues relating to apologies have been politicized, used, abused, etc.
This lecture will touch on areas of media and media messaging, politics, comparative international relations, communication, and history.
Documenting Japan: 45|45
The visual is an incredibly important way of conveying information and telling stories, and certain images become embedded in our memory, and help define individuals and generations, and can also shape history. Documentary photography (photojournalism) has been extremely powerful in driving social change since the very early days of photography and this lecture will introduce the IAFOR Documentary Photography Award, and include a slideshow of the winners of last year’s competition.
The main body of the lecture will then give a visual historical and cultural tour of Japan by introducing 45 images of the country in 45 minutes.
