The International Academic Forum (IAFOR) in association with the Osaka School of International Public Policy (OSIPP) at the University of Osaka, and the Asia Political and International Studies Association (APISA) is pleased to announce The Asia-Pacific Conference on Security and International Relations 2016 (APSec2016).
This interdisciplinary conference will bring together leading thinkers on issues of security and international relations affecting the world, held Thursday, December 1 - Friday, December 2, 2016 at the Osaka University’s Nakanoshima Center in Japan. APSec2016 will see researchers, professionals and academics presenting on and exploring the conference theme, “Fearful Futures – Peace and Security in Asia”. Participants are invited to look at the evolving issues in security and international relations in the Asia-Pacific.
Whether military incursions in the blue waters of the South China Sea, ethnic violence in Southeast Asia or the threat of nuclear proliferation in Northeast Asia, there is an increasingly uneasy jostling for power and position in the Asia-Pacific.
In the context of rising global economic uncertainty, with a background of religious, cultural and societal fractures, the rise of nationalism and authoritarianism is a symptom detected across the states in the region, including those which are democracies. Perceived threats from traditional and non-state actors are being used to justify stifling dissent, increasing surveillance, and the removing of freedoms, as security and defence apparatus are turned as much on enemies within a state as outside.
APSec Keynote Speaker will be Yukio Satoh, a member of the Global Zero Commission, Washington, and the International Advisory Board of RUSI International, London. Previously, he was a member of the National Commission on Public Safety, Japan, the President of JIIA (2003-2009) and a member of the Council of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). He is currently Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA).
