ACSS/ACSEE 2014 Conference Report
Thursday June 12 – Sunday June 15, 2014
Conference Theme: “Individual, Community & Society: Conflict, Resolution & Synergy”
The Fourth Annual Asian Conference on Social Sciences (ACSS) and the Fourth Annual Conference on Sustainability, Energy and the Environment (ACSEE) was held last June in Osaka, Japan. Delegates from over 40 nations experienced an exciting and enjoyable exchange of research approaches, network building, and the interplay of fresh ideas as we looked to work together as academics towards the interdisciplinary creation of a sustainable future.
IAFOR was also pleased to welcome back to Osaka as a Featured Speaker, Lowell Sheppard, the Asia Pacific Director of HOPE International Development Agency. In his address, Mr. Sheppard focused on the conference theme “Individual, Community and Society: Conflict, Resolution and Synergy” and how his Asian-based organization carries out its quest to assist the 3rd world to climb out of poverty through its continual disaster relief efforts.
The organizing committee at IAFOR was also pleased to welcome ACSS/ACSEE 2014 Featured Speaker Professor Jay Friedlander, the Sharpe-McNally Chair of Green and Socially Responsible Business, College of the Atlantic, USA. Professor Jay Friedlander’s presentation “Strategic Sustainability: Creating Abundant Enterprises” drew upon his expertise as not only a leading academic in the business sustainability discipline, but also as a former Fortune 100 strategy consultant and Chief Operating Officer of a large natural and organic restaurant group.
IAFOR was also fortunate to have as our ACSS/ACSEE 2014 Spotlight Speakers Professors Amy Szarkowski & Yukinori Komine from the Harvard Medical School, USA, who spoke on “Conceptualizing Soft Power in the U.S. Decision to Implement the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.” Szarkowski and Komine argued that by addressing disability rights the United States has the soft power potential to enhance it’s prestige in the international community as well as serve its own national interests in the long term.
The conference team wishes to extend its thanks to the ACSS/ACSEE 2014 Conference Co-Chair Reverend Professor Stuart Picken – Chairman of the IAFOR IAB for his guidance and expert leadership in putting together the conference program. Lastly IAFOR wishes to thank all the delegates for their fantastic contribution and enthusiasm when attending the 2014 ACSS and ACSEE Conferences.
